Digestion & Detoxification

One of the BIGGEST things Most programs leave out, is how it's not just about WHAT you eat that impacts metabolism and weight loss, it's also HOW you're eating. And really, how your digestive and detoxification processes are functioning, period. 

Now I want you to imagine what it would feel like to wake up, EVER single day, loving the body you saw in the mirror. Weight loss is a problem of the past and not even something you think about anymore because you've put that problem behind you. You get to admire your flat stomach in the mirror, and be over-joyed to peak into your closet and choose what you get to wear today, because EVERY thing fits well on you. This is what mornings can be like once you get your Goddess Body, and one of the biggest cornerstones to achieving that is learning how to master your own digestion and detoxification, which is exactly what we'll be getting into today.

Digestion

The Capacity to absorb nutrients from the food you're eating 

Top Signs of Imbalance:

  • Heartburn, acid reflux
  • 'Gut rot' sensations
  • Feeling unwell after eating
  • Feeling sluggish, slow, foggy-brained after eating
  • Excessive belching, hiccuping
  • Trapped gas, bloating, passing gas
  • Abdominal pain
  • Seeing food in the stool (other than corn, etc) 
  • Constipation or diarrhea 
  • A Slow transit time - more than 24 hours from eating the food to pooping it out
  • Not fully evacuating when you go to the bathroom
  • Very foul smelling stool
  • Stool that is dark in colour or has mucus in it (or blood) 

Why Is It A Problem:

Not digesting your food properly actually slows down metabolism. Board-Certified Gastroenterologist Dr. Kenneth Brown notes that while it's common to think of digestive issues leading to weight loss, there are actually quite a few situations where digestive issues leads to weight GAIN. He notes that acid reflux, ulcers, constipation, bacterial overgrowth, IBS and IBD (Crohn's or Colitis) can all actually be linked to weight gain.

Now, even if you don't have a frank disease state going on like the above, Registered Holistic Nutritionist and Author of The Weight Loss Battlefield Lisa Tsakos notes that simply under-functioning (again - SUBCLINICAL) digestion can promote weight gain and inhibit fat loss. 

For this reason it makes no sense to take on weight loss goals if you aren't also willing to improve upon your digestive health. 

How Did This Happen?

The biggest culprit is eating under stress, during which there is not enough blood flow in the digestive tract to support digestion as it has been shunted out toward the skeletal muscles. This means you produce less healthy stomach acid and fewer digestive enzymes, so you don't fully and properly digest your food.

Another main culprit is eating foods you are sensitive to that your body doesn't like. This causes inflammation and shuts down proper digestion. 

You also may have 'bugs' in your gut: excess yeast / candida, excess bacteria (SIBO - small intestine bacterial overgrowth), or the wrong type of bacteria in the wrong place, and parasites. These bugs perpetuate weight gain, inflammation and ill health. Often times they are linked to poor diet and stressful lifestyle.

Best Rebalancing Techniques:

  • Consider getting Food Allergy (IgG Allergy) testing done 
  • Avoid eating at your desk or in front of a screen (including phone, TV, computer)
  • Eat in a low-stress environment 
  • Chew 20 to ideally 50 bites per mouthful to digest food as much as possible
  • Slow down your eating
  • Fast for 12 hours per day to give the GI tract a rest; from 8pm to 8am, for example 
  • Consider taking digestive enzymes, betaine HCL, and ox bile with meals

True Hunger

The Ability to know and respect when you are truly, physiologically hungry - versus eating when you aren't actually hungry! (Hint: Most women don't even realize they do this!)

Top Signs of Imbalance:

  • Do you eat when you're not actually hungry? Perhaps you don't even know what true hunger feels like!
  • Having to eat every 2 - 3 hours because you're hangry / moody / your blood sugar is crashing
  • Having to always have snacks on hand
  • Unable to miss a meal without getting moody, dizzy, angry, starvational 
  • Eating first thing in the morning when you wake up because you feel gross, and eating makes the feeling go away - this is a sign your body is still in detox mode, so you either woke up too early, OR you're too toxic. The only thing that breaks it is eating, even though your body isn't physically hungry
  • Eating just because you're stomach is rumbling (this is not hunger, this is your Migrating Motor Complex / MMC, your stomach adjusting its shape) 
  • Eating at social events when you aren't actually hungry, or eating beyond the point of fullness
  • Eating for emotional reasons 
  • Craving food constantly because you eat foods devoid of vitamins and nutrients, so your body keeps searching for them

Why Is It A Problem:

Any time we disregard true hunger and eat anyways, we start to dysregulate Leptin and become leptin resistant again, which we now know is a surefire way to gain back the weight and to become overweight in the first place. 

A lot of women get panicky and eat when their blood sugar is low, when they are detoxing in the mornings, or for social and emotional reasons. The fact that we feel panic around hunger at all is a negative sign and proves we aren't in touch with what our body actually wants and needs (it isn't food!) Anything we eat in these situations goes BEYOND our caloric requirements. 

So - in short, eating without true hunger = WEIGHT GAIN. 

How Did This Happen?

  • Eating a high carb diet puts us on the blood sugar rollercoaster which can (and needs to be) transformed for weight loss - insulin resistance needs to be corrected
  • Being overly toxic - a high level of toxins in the body - this comes from a work hard play hard lifestyle; overeating, drinking alcohol, caffeine beyond 1 cup of coffee a day, drugs, medications, toxins in the air / pollution / drinking water. 
  • Choosing processed foods that lack nutrients 

Best Rebalancing Techniques:

  • Returning to a whole-foods-based nutritional plan at least 80% of the time (17 meals out of your 21 per week) 
  • Considering a detoxification protocol which I'll mention below
  • Lowering the amount of carbs you eat to 50 - 100g per day, sourced from vegetables - leafy greens and starchy ones, with a lesser focus on fruits, nuts and seeds

Detoxification

Your body's ability to filter out toxins from the world and keep your internal environment healthy and vital 

Top Signs of Imbalance:

If you are overly toxic this means your liver, kidneys and other organs of detoxification are not working fast enough to keep up with the toxic load in your body. Here are the top signs:

  • Acne, skin problems
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Digestive difficulties (see the list above under digestion) 
  • Varicose veins, spider veins 
  • Dark purple veins under the tongue 
  • Feeling of malaise, lethargy, fatigue
  • Difficulty waking in the morning

Why Is It A Problem:

If your liver is not functioning up to snuff, it's unable to break down the hormones of the body. Hormones are just chemical messengers. Their job is to deliver a message to a certain type of cell, and then be recycled, just like you recycle newspapers after reading them. The LIVER is the recycling plant. However, when it's to-do list grows so huge, it can't tackle all of its daily responsibilities. It fails to recycle the daily paper, so you keep getting yesterday's news - again, and again, and again. And again. The same message keeps replaying even though you've already read it. 

The liver is our filter. It protects us from a cup of coffee killing us. It detoxifies the things we breathe, eat and drink. But in our increasingly toxic world, if we don't stop every now and again (like once or twice a year) to support our liver and other organs of detoxification, they get increasingly sluggish and can't break down hormones.

This leads to SUB CLINICAL HORMONAL IMBALANCES, which we know by now = WEIGHT GAIN. 

Several studies coming out of Europe in the early 2000s showed that toxins do lead to weight gain. Fat-soluble toxins are stored in the body fat and only come out as body fat is burned, which is one reason. 

One main toxin group is called POPs, or Persistent Organic Pollutants, sourced from fungicides, insectides, paint and building materials, burning garbage, the food supply, and more. Environmental exposure is as much a problem as food exposure, and they are everywhere now. 

Most people see an increase in total POP burden of 3-5% per year, because they just keep accumulating more and more, and the POPs don’t break down. But the storage doesn’t totally seal them off from the rest of you: storing a lot of these chemicals in body fat can be a source of constant, low-level exposure to them. That’s dangerous, because high concentrations of POPs are associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases including high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. 

And there’s also some evidence that these chemicals can cause weight gain, by modifying the way that genes are expressed in fat cells.

The issue is, if your body knows you have massive toxin amounts in your fat, AND your liver and other organs aren't in shape to detox those chemicals at a fast rate, your body WON'T want to lose the fat. It's just too much to handle. This is why detox - and giving your liver the support it needs to do its job - IS important for weight loss. 

Byron J. Richards, Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist says: Your body's ability to process trash, including toxic trash, is a pervasive factor in your ability to lose weight and reach a healthy goal weight. Struggling with this issue activates backup strategies for dealing with toxic overload, which include expanding the number of fat cells and stuffing them with toxins as well as fat. This is likely done to get the toxic trash out of your circulation and away from key organs. It causes easy weight gain and complicates weight loss because your body does not easily give up the toxic fat it has stored.(19)

Your body will lose fat more slowly when it isn’t primed to properly break down and excrete toxins as they release. If you optimize your detoxification channels, it means your body is more comfortable with breaking down a lot of fat, more quickly. However, a detox program alone, like a packet that you grab from the health food store, while they can be great for optimizing detoxification channels, they lack the wholistic approach to rebalance your hormones. So while they have benefits, they only offer one piece of the puzzle and lack the wholistic aspect needed.

How Did This Happen?

  • Medications use up liver enzymes quickly and unnaturally
  • So do drugs, street drugs / recreational drugs, alcohol, over-the-counter meds (supplements do NOT do this)
  • Eating non-foods: artificial sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, white sugar
  • Eating foods your body is sensitive to - it will then have to detoxify them and bog down the liver. The top ones are gluten, dairy, soy and eggs
  • Being in a toxic environment at work or at home (chemical exposure)
  • Even drinking out of disposable cups contains glue that the liver has to detoxify 

Best Rebalancing Techniques:

  • A liver supportive program that combines the right nutrients + the removal of excess toxin exposure
  • Eliminating non-foods and processed foods and eating only whole foods for 6 - 9 weeks to reboot the system 
  • Eating a hypoallergenic, anti-inflammatory nutritional plan so that it is unlikely the liver will have to clean up any dietary messes

  • Increased pain; poor pain tolerance 
  • Overweight

Why Is It A Problem:

Inflammation itself is a chemical cascade in the body. The chemicals released by inflammation cause LEPTIN RESISTANCE, which leads to weight gain. We spoke about inflammation causing leptin resistance in Video 1. Not only that, but inflammation is the underlying factor in every major disease: cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes and more. Having ongoing inflammation in your body puts you at a high risk of disease. 

In short, inflammation:

  • Causes FAT gain directly 
  • Causes water weight gain, making you feel slow, sluggish and overweight
  • Overwhelms the liver, slowing down detoxification 

How Did This Happen?

  • Eating too many carbs (beyond 100 - 150g a day)
  • Eating too many Omega 6 fats from processed foods, restaurant food 
  • Eating white sugar 
  • A stressful lifestyle causes inflammation too
  • Eating foods your body is sensitive to
  • Adrenal fatigue

Digestion and Detoxification are SUCH critical cornerstones to not only weight loss, but also to lifelong health and resiliency. That is why these things are so focused on in the Goddess Body Guidelines, and my Goal from today's video is that you should now understand WHY we can't leave out these critical organ systems in order to lose weight.

We've talked all about the GUT now but did you know there is a major GUT-BRAIN connection in the body? In fact, you'd be shocked to learn how some brain chemicals can actually PURPOSELY make you choose poor foods, sugars, even chocolate and that their effect is SO STRONG, human willpower is not designed to overcome it. Brain and Biology is KING, and assuming we can overpower that with 'willpower' alone sets us up for failure.
